DEFINING TRADE AREAS

Trade Areas allows users to generate a single trade area from a single point of interest (POI), or many trade areas from a list of POIs. Trade areas can be represented as either radii or drive time polygons, and can be organized into categories such as existing locations, competitor locations and collaborator locations.

Generate Trade Areas


  1. Click on the “Trade Area” Icon from your toolbar at the top of your screen.


  2. From here you should see the “Define Trade Areas” dialog box open as shown below.


  3. From here you can set the first drop down menu “Ring Type” to either “Radius” or “Drive Time”

    a. If “Drive Time” is selected, “Minutes” will auto populate the second drop down menu of “Ring Units”

    b. If “Radius” is selected, you can choose from either “Miles” or “Feet” from the drop down menu of “Ring Units”.



  4. Now you can select the “Ring #” drop down to select either 1, 2, or 3 Rings based on your preference.

    a. If you chose “Drive Time” as your Ring Type you can enter the minutes you prefer for each ring (ex. 10,20,30) and we recommend not surpassing 60 minutes.

    b. If you chose “Radius” as your Ring Type you can enter the number of feet or miles for each ring (ex. 1, 3, 5)



  5. Once you click “Ok” at the bottom it will ask you to select your trade area center location on the map and display the message below in the top right hand corner of your screen.


  6. Once you click on the location of your liking you will get the message below to confirm location. If you are not happy with the location you can click “No” and place your trade area location elsewhere.


  7. Once you click “Yes” you will get the following spinning wheel in the top right hand corner while it generates followed by a “Trade Area Success” message.


  8. Your Trade Area should be generated on your map and open up the “Trade Area Options” window as shown below.

    Note: The window above is the only way to switch between Active Rings. At the moment, if you close this window there is no way to have it reappear. If you select a ring on the map it will bring up a slightly different window that has the same options, but only for that one ring.



  1. Merchants (IC) by Ring: gives the user the ability to search the Irvine Company Merchants data set using the rings available in the Active Ring drop down
  2. a. Once you select the Merchants (IC) by Ring option, a search form will appear allow you to select different search criteria for the Merchants data set. Once complete selecting criteria, click OK at the bottom of the search form.



    b. After clicking OK, the shape of the chosen Active Ring will be added as an Inclusion Area, but this will not be automatically turn on. Navigate to the Inclusion Area search tab at the top left of your map, from there select the check box on the filter to turn it on. You will now see the appropriate search results on your map

    i. Note: when finished with this search remember to remove this Inclusion Area by selecting the Search Options tab and selecting Clear Filter



  3. Merchants (IC) by Map: gives the user the ability to search the Irvine Company Merchants data setand see the results on the whole map a. Once you select the Merchants (IC) by Map option, a search form will appear allow you to select different search criteria for the Merchants data set. Once complete selecting criteria, click OK at the bottom of the search form.

  1. Businesses (TT) by Ring: gives the user the ability to search the TomTom Points of Interest data set using the rings available in the Active Ring drop down.

    a. Once you select the Business (TT) by Ring option, a search form will appear allow you to select different search criteria for the Points of Interest data set. Once complete selecting criteria, click OKat the bottom of the search form.

    b. After clicking OK, the shape of the chosen Active Ring will be added as an Inclusion Area, but this will not be automatically turn on. Navigate to the Inclusion Area search tab at the top left of your map, from there select the check box on the filter to turn it on. You will now see the appropriate search results on your map

    i. Note: when finished with this search remember to remove this Inclusion Area by selecting the Search Options tab and selecting Clear Filter



  2. Businesses (TT) by Map: gives the user the ability to search the TomTom Points of Interest data set and see the results on the whole map
  3. a. Once you select the Merchants (IC) by Map option, a search form will appear allow you to select different search criteria for the Merchants data set. Once complete selecting criteria, click OK at the bottom of the search form.

  4. View Site Demographics: Generates a demographics PDF report for the rings populated on the map
  5. a. When this option is selected a processing icon will appear in the top right of the map, once complete a report icon will appear in the same location. Select this icon to download the PDF report.

  6. Edit Style: gives the user the ability to change the fill and line color of the rings on the map
  7. a. Once option is selected the style window will appear. In this window you can change the Fill Color, Opacity, Line Color and Line Width of the Trade Area Rings

    i. Note: Once you select a color it may not take effect, to ensure it does select the “Style” drop down, select another item in the list then reselect DEFAULT [User]

    b. If you have multiple rings for your Trade Area have the capability to make each one a different color by selecting the Ramp button next to Fill Color or Line Color. This opens a new window listing each individual ring. Select the color swatch to the left of the Value field

  8. Add Label: allows the user to place a label anywhere on the map

    a. Select option, a new window will appear allowing you to enter the text for your label. Enter your text and select OK. Now place your label anywhere on the map, once placing is finished select OK from the drawing toolbar at the bottom of the map to complete placement.

  9. Print: allows user to print their current mapview

    a. Select option, the Advance Print window will appear. From this window you can edit map header & footers, toggle legend appearance, map orientation, map size and other options.

    i. To see changes made to print out remember to select Refresh at the top left of the Advanced Print window.

  10. Save Rings: allows user to save the Trade Areas on the map. If this option is not utilized then the current Trade Area Rings will be lost if the user generates new Trade Area Rings of logs out of LandVision.

    a. Select option, a Save Drive Ring Layer window will appear. Ensure the USER folder is selected, then create a save name and finally select OK

    b. To open your saved rings, select Layers from the main toolbar and select More Layers from the bottom of the Layers toolbar. Find your layer and then use the arrow in the middle of the Browse Layers window to pull your rings into the Active layers section
